SAMPLERS BEWARE

We encourage all of the producers we work with to work hard to create original music absent of samples. We respect the talent it takes to sample well within hip hop but the publishing companies that own the rights to the original content want their money and deservedly so. Often times the bigger name artists work out an arrangement with the original artists to clear the sample. It is surprising to see Wayne's album coming under fire this week for not clearly following the sample clearance process. The first issue came out when it was discovered Wayne's smash hit " A Millie" sampled a relatively unknown Phife Dawg. It seems Phife and Wayne are working it out amicably. The Rolling Stones on the other hand aren't playing as nice. The publishing company that owns the rights to The Rolling Stones " Play With Fire" is suing Wayne, and his recording home Universal for copyright infringement and unfair competition. Wayne released a track called "Playing with Fire" that is a "direct derivative of The Rolling Stones" song. I hope this all can be worked out as Wayne's album is incredible and has given Hip Hop new life.
