PEARL JAM'S TEN SOUNDS EVEN BETTER 17 YEARS LATER

I'm an 80's baby, and although Hip Hop is my true love, I grew up a big fan of alternative/grunge rock, which exploded onto the scene in the early 1990's. One of my favorite bands of the era is Pearl Jam. They are rereleasing their classic album TEN today, remixed and remastered. I recommend that all of you who weren't around or weren't old enough to hear this album when it was released in 1991, go and cop it.

WIKI OF THE DAY0 3/23/2009: TELEPROMPTER

After last week's teleprompter fiasco,in which, Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen was forced to do his best Barack Obama impersonation, the device has gained quite a bit a of notoriety. The teleprompter, which is defined as a display device that prompts the person speaking with an electronic visual text of a speech or script, had accidentally displayed The President's speech instead of his. Since the event, President Obama has been unmercifully ridiculed by the news media for his crutch-like reliance on the device. In fact, Barack's teleprompter has been given its own name, Totus, and has come to life on the blog: http://www.baracksteleprompter.blogspot.com. CNN's Anderson Cooper 360 did a video feature, narrated by the teleprompter, last night. The curiosity bug hit me and I had to wiki it.

WIKI OF THE DAY 03/18/2009: PONZI SCHEME

Anyone who hasn't been hiding under the proverbial rock in the last 3 months has heard the term Ponzi scheme used dozens of times. It is the primary term used to describe Bernard Madoff's massive $50 Billion scam. Unlike St. Patrick's Day, I did have a lay person's understanding of what a Ponzi Scheme was prior to wikiing it. However, I thought it very important for me to get a better understanding of what it is and also

Most of us consider ourselves way too smart to be fooled by scam artists. The Madoff scandal should offer us an opportunity to reevaluate our intelligence and accept our ignorance. Madoff fooled some of the brightest, most experienced, and most conservative investors and regulators that he was running a legitimate operation. One of the principles I live my life by is: ABA- ALWAYS BE AWARE. So take the time, click the link, and educate yourselves on what a Ponzi scheme is and key warning signs to pay attention for. In an economy like this one, new Ponzi schemes are being cooked up by both the desperate and those looking to take advantage of the desperate.

One person at a time = more than one...duh!

Huh? For a long time, our motto at M.O.V.E. Records has been "one person at a time" meaning that we are willing to convert fans one at a time if necessary. With the viral power of the internet and blogs etc., I believe this should apply to anyone who is in the business of promoting. In actuality, "one person at a time" leads to many more than one - oftentimes exponentially. People cannot keep their mouths shut or prevent their finger from pressing the "forward" tab in their emails when they like something. In fact, many marketing experts say that "word of mouth" is the most powerful form of marketing. So the question is, how hard are you willing to work? Don't be scared to convert one person at a time because it really ends up being much more than that. This is what Barack did (and is still doing).
The key is to make sure your message/pitch is crystallized and consistent - almost annoyingly redundant...never allow them to forget! Keep the grind alive!

WIKI OF THE DAY 03/17: SAINT PATRICK'S DAY

I've been alive for almost 28 years now. During those 28 years I've lived to experience 28 Saint Patrick's days. Not being Irish and being a first generation American, I have always looked at St. Paddy's day as nothing more than a dastardly plot by the bars and beer and liquor companies to reap in huge profits. Ignorant I know, but its hard to take any holiday seriously in which the main activity is getting drunk all day.I'll be honest I was taught in grade school, about its significance but have not had any reason to remember it. I conducted a small survey amongst my friends today and they were
a.)inebriated beyond comprehension
b.)made something up (my friends tend to hate to admit when they don't know something)
c.) were honest in telling me they had no clue.

When all else failed, I decided to look it up on my favorite site in the world, Wikipedia. So for those of you who care enough to know why you wear green and act a fool every March 17th, I present to you the first wiki of the day!

MARY J'S COPYRIGHT LAWSUIT THROWN OUT BUT...

A lawsuit accusing Mary J. Blige of copyright infringement has been thrown out. According to the reports, an unknown rapper submitted a demo to Universal with a song that he claims has nearly identical lyrics to Blige's "Family Affair." In order to win a copyright battle of this sort, the plaintiff must present evidence that she owned the copyright, that the lyrics and or beat is "strikingly similar" to that of the original, that the defendant had access to music, and that it was used without permission (misappropriation). The court found that the plaintiff failed to produce substantial evidence and dismissed the case...
In my opinion, there are two sides of this story (and several others like it) that should be explored. First, there are some zealous haters who will sue you frivolously in attempt to extort you. Artists beware. Second, MANY known artists and producers steal music and concepts. People can only be so original after ten to twenty years of making music.
The bottom line is - PROTECT YOUR MUSIC - COPYRIGHT IT AND DO NOT BE LAZY WITH THIS. Many of these artists have the top lawyers that will fight (and win) these cases if your case isn't airtight. Please go to www.copyright.gov

Obama to Help Small Businesses

It is difficult to determine who the recession has affected the most, but many different groups have an argument. Small business owners particularly have it tough because many banks have frozen their lending (or significantly decreased it), and loans are ever so important for small businesses to cover things such as payroll. Without some sort of solution, many small businesses are in danger of dissolving. Enter Barack Obama. In an effort to prevent this from happening, President Obama has announced a plan to aid small businesses. Specifically he plans on injecting 15 billion dollars into the industry, by buying up securities that are linked to small business loans. This isn't likely to fix the problem completely (or intended to) but it should be a boost. Pay close attention to this. Time to get your small business up!

ARTIST HUSTLE SPOTLIGHT: MACHINE GUN KELLY

MGK aka Machine Gun Kelly has been developing quite a buzz with his rapid fire rhymes and new single " Hell Yeah." However, Kelly's story goes much deeper than fast rhymes and a white suburban kid's love for hip hop. Music not only saved his life but became a path for MGK to gain acceptance. For MGK life without music is hardly a life worth living. We sat down with him for an quick interview

WHAT'S GOOD? CAN YOU START BY GIVING US SOME BACKGROUND ON WHO YOU ARE AND WHERE YOU COME FROM?

Yea yea, this is the kid MGK, Machine Gun Kelly, hailin straight outta Cleveland OH-10. Im 18 years old, a white boy, and one of the hottest rappers you never heard, so hit up www.myspace.com/machinegunkellyak and get hip!

HOW DID YOU GET INTO MUSIC?

Right at the beginning of middle school, me and my father had a lot of personal problems going on. I dressed terribly, no style at all, i didn't really have any friends, and there wasn't a lot of white boys who hung around the areas and the crowd i did so i was an easy target for bullies etc. I was constantly getting picked on, jumped, beaten up, and thats when i picked up those headphones and zoned out. Even though im not a battle rapper, thats how i started, and after that first battle, i literally went from the biggest lame to like the most popular guy in the school in like 2 bars, real talk. Everything just escaladed from there...

WHAT MUSICAL GENRES INFLUENCED YOU THE MOST GROWING UP?

Complete silence, becuase i realized that without music, life sucks!

WHAT ARTISTS WOULD YOU SAY HAVE HAD THE MOST INFLUENCE ON YOU?

The Temptations because they are the best group ever, the Who because they didn't care about anybody's opinion, and rappers like Mystikal, Busta Rhymes, Luda, Kanye and the Fresh Prince because they hold it down for , their city, and !

HOW DID YOU GET THE NICKNAME MACHINE GUN KELLY

Because i can spit out words like a Machine Gun, flat out!

WHERE AND HOW CAN PEOPLE GET YOUR MUSIC?

Like i sai, www.myspace.com/machinegunkellyak or the youtube channel www.youtube.com/machinegunkellyak and follow me on www.twitter.com/machinegunkelly

WHAT CAN PEOPLE LOOK FOR FROM YOU IN '09?

Any and everything, if it was my choice i'd be on your TV, your radio, your computer, and every billboard you got in your city, but we'll see what happens...

YOU'VE LIVED IN MANY PLACES DURING YOUR LIFE, WHAT MAKES CLEVELAND/OHIO SPECIAL?

It made me a man, i haven't been arrested or really got into much trouble since ive lived here. It's the poorest city in the US and it really shows you that its life or death out here, no one wants to see you succeed and when they see you get somethin they don't got, they are going to get it, or at least try. People have tried multiple times, but ultimately, my grind, and all the bullshit this city has put me through, ended up leaving me on top, and i've gained the city's respect. What other white boy from this city has done what ive done and achieved what i have....? EXACTLY! "I have outgrew so many things the hood does not fit me/ but I can't forget my past i brought the whole hood with me/ because i love my city, it made me who i am/ tattoo reads city boy, but i'm my city's man!" Let it be known, the kid is officially in this, MGK all day!

JACQUE REID INTERVIEWS MEKKA DON

I have yet to meet Mekka Don face to face, but he seems like a man who knows what he wants. He took some criticism for leaving a career as a lawyer to pursue his dream of becoming a Hip Hop rapper. But seems to be making his mark in the music world. When it comes to love and relationships, he seems to have a refreshing understanding of women. For that we owe thanks to his mother and two older sisters. In this Man Talk session, Mekka Don breaks down how men really feel about aggressive women, if men should pay for the date, and what a man may think if you have sex on the first date.
