So I hopped on my flight to Miami this past Thursday to kick it with the boys for the weekend. I was sitting in “my” seat and minding my own business until I was alerted to the fact that I was in the wrong seat. Whose seat was I in? DJ Envy’s! My bad fam! After a little bit of shuffling, we still ended up sitting next to each other (I never ended up in my assigned seat). So we chatted it up for a bit throughout the flight and I interviewed him for my blog. Turns out he’s a cool ass dude. Fate? See the interview below:
1. Where are you from?
Queens, NY
2. How did you come up with your DJ name?
We had a company called Envy Productions with another DJ named DJ Mono. Back then I was DJ Shrimp. But bootleggers saw Envy on our albums at record stores and started calling me DJ Envy
3. What made you want to become a DJ?
DJ Clue lived across the street. He was always driving expensive cars. I wanted to do the same.
4. If you weren’t a DJ, what would be your ideal job?
Whatever makes money!
5. How has being a DJ affected your life?
It saved me from the drug era- especially in Queens where it was bad
6. What is the hardest thing about being a DJ?
Everybody’s a DJ nowadays so the hardest thing is keeping hot and staying relevant
7. Most fun thing about being a DJ?
Traveling. I’ve been everywhere. I’ve been all over the world including Asia – and all on somebody else’s dime!
8. What do you think about mixtapes?
I think they’re finished because they’re so many DJs now. Also, nobody knows how to mix anymore.
9. What artists are hottest in the clubs right now?
Red Café, Fabolous, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Nipsey Hussle, JayZ
10.What do you think about the music that’s out today? Do you miss any era of music?
I love music. I like lyricists like Em, Drake, and Jay. I also like fun music like Wacka Flocka. But I do miss the era of the late 1990s and 2000s. Back then music was more about having fun. Before, people made music to express their lifestyle - now it seems like most artists just make music to make money.
11.What is the #1 piece of advice you would give to up and coming DJs?
Go Hard. Keep Grindin’
12.Anything (websites, twitter, etc.) you want to plug?
Twitter.com/djenvy, Facebook.com/djenvy – can find shows etc.
